Sitting north-east of Luton town centre, Hart Hill is an inner residential area of the town in Bedfordshire, England. It is roughly bounded by Turners Road South and Vauxhall Way to the north, Crescent Road to the south, Crawley Green Road to the east, and Hitchin Road to the west, with Hart Lane running through its centre.
Character and Local Amenities
The area is predominantly residential, with a scattering of shops along Hart Lane and Abbots Wood Road. St. Anne’s Church on Crawley Green Road serves the community and lends its name to the loosely defined area of St. Anne’s Hill, which overlaps parts of Hart Hill and the neighbouring Crawley Green. Families in the area also have access to Hart Hill Nursery School and the Hart Hill adventure play area. The southern part of Hart Hill was established during the 19th century, including Hart Hill Drive, a private road of houses with views overlooking the town. Much of the northern section, however, consists of post-war estate housing built in the decades after 1945.
The Water Tower
One of the most recognisable features of Hart Hill is the Grade II-listed water tower on Hart Lane. When looking eastwards from Luton town centre, it is one of the most prominent points on the skyline. The structure was built in 1901 in response to a drought that had affected the Stopsley area, and it has a counterpart of similar age on West Hill Road in New Town.
Politics and Administration
Hart Hill is divided across the Round Green, Crawley, and High Town wards, all of which fall within the parliamentary constituency of Luton South. The MP for the constituency is Rachel Hopkins, representing the Labour Party.
