Sundon Park Map

Tucked into the northern edge of Luton in the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire, Sundon Park takes its name from the nearby villages of Upper Sundon and Lower Sundon. The suburb is roughly bounded by the edge of Luton to the north, Leagrave Park to the south, the Midland Main Line railway to the west, and Spinney Woods along with a connecting footpath to the east. The official gateway into the area is the Sundon Arch, a railway bridge linking Sundon Park Road to Toddington Road.

Layout and Streets

Sundon Park divides into two quite different sections, split by Hill Rise. To the south lies the older portion, known locally as “the Avenues” – a grid of long, straight, numbered roads. Fourth Avenue was the first of these to be built, in the 1920s, with the remaining avenues following during the 1930s. North of Hill Rise, the housing is newer, built mainly during the 1950s and 1960s, with roads named after hills and mountains across Britain, including Grampian Way and Pennine Avenue. All properties across the estate were built as owner-occupier homes. The estate was originally developed as a self-contained community to serve the SKF ball bearing factory, which has since been largely converted into industrial units, with other industrial facilities concentrated in the strip between Sundon Park Road and the railway line.

Shops, Schools, and Local Life

Shopping is centred around the junction of Hill Rise and Sundon Park Road, where a precinct has convenience stores, takeaways, a petrol station, a large Aldi superstore, and a community centre. A smaller parade of shops also sits on Ashwell Avenue. Two schools serve the area: Parklea Primary School on Cranbrook Drive and Kinross Crescent covers ages 4 to 11, while Lealands High School on Sundon Park Road caters for ages 11 to 16. Alongside Lealands is the City Learning Centre for Luton, known as elearning@luton. Politically, Sundon Park falls within the Sundon Park ward, represented by two Liberal Democrat councillors, and sits within the parliamentary constituency of Luton North, whose MP is Sarah Owen of the Labour Party.
