Lewsey Farm Map

Sitting about three miles west north-west of Luton town centre, Lewsey is a suburb and ward of the Borough of Luton, within the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire. Its boundaries are roughly defined by Leagrave High Street to the north, Dunstable Road to the south, Poynters Road to the west, and the M1 motorway to the east. The suburb sits within a wider ward that also takes in Lewsey Farm and Lewsey Park.

Origins and History

The name Lewsey comes from the Lucy family, who held the land from 1305 to 1455, including the neighbouring Lewsey Farmhouse and Lewsey Park. Ownership then passed to the Wingate family, lords of the manor of Toddington. The old manor house itself straddled the parishes of Luton and Houghton Regis, and most of its buildings were lost to fire in 1832. The residential suburb as it exists today began to take shape in the 1950s, when housing was built on land off Dunstable Road alongside a new hospital. At that time the area was surrounded by farmland on all sides, with the original Lewsey Farmhouse still standing to the north. The housing built during that period reflects its era, with square, large-windowed houses and a generous number of bungalows, many fronted by bay windows.

Local Facilities and Landmarks

Near the centre of Lewsey sits the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, which provides healthcare for Luton and the surrounding urban area, including Dunstable and Houghton Regis. Two churches serve the suburb: St. Hugh’s Church of England on Leagrave High Street, and a chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Poynters Road. A post office on Dunstable Road adds to the local amenities. Schools in the area include Ferrars Junior School, Ferrars Nursery, The Ferrars Academy, The Chalk Hills Academy, and Seabrook Day Nursery. Local news is covered by two weekly papers, the Herald and Post and the Luton News.
