New Town Map

Sitting just south-east of Luton town centre, New Town is a district in Bedfordshire bounded by Castle Street and London Road to the west, Seymour Road to the east, New Town Street to the north, and Cutenhoe Road to the south. Its position close to the ring road gives it straightforward access to the M1 motorway and the expanding Luton Airport, both of which have shaped the character of this part of the town.

History and Character

Castle Street, which forms part of the western boundary, was once the site of a medieval castle, and the area has long been associated with working-class life in Luton. Traditional pubs have been a feature of the district for generations. Like many similar areas across England, New Town saw significant change in the 1960s when a housing shortage prompted the construction of several multi-storey flats. The 1980s brought further development with the addition of an industrial park, intended to draw new industries to the area. The ring road nearby was built during the same period to manage the flow of traffic between the motorway and the airport.

Politics and Local Coverage

New Town falls within the South ward of Luton, represented by three Labour councillors: Cllr David Agbley, Cllr Fatima Begum, and Cllr Javeria Hussain. The ward is part of the Luton South parliamentary constituency, with Rachel Hopkins (Labour) serving as the Member of Parliament. Residents are served by two weekly newspapers, the Herald and Post and the Luton News, both of which cover the broader Luton area.
